These are the formats Statistics departments set most often. Each is marked differently, and answering one in the shape of another is a common and costly error.

Referencing in Statistics

Statistics uses APA 7 or Harvard. APA 7 where statistics sits inside a psychology or education programme, Harvard in most business and social science contexts. APA has specific rules for reporting statistical symbols that are marked closely.

Where marks are lost in Statistics

  • Multiple comparisons uncorrected. Running twenty tests and reporting the one that reached significance.

A worked example

Assumption handling, before and after

Before: An independent samples t-test was conducted and showed a significant difference between the groups (p = .03).

After: Shapiro-Wilk indicated a departure from normality in the intervention group (W = 0.91, p = .008), and Levene’s test indicated unequal variances (F = 6.2, p = .015). A Mann-Whitney U test was therefore used in place of the planned independent samples t-test. The intervention group scored higher (Mdn = 14) than controls (Mdn = 11), U = 512, z = 2.18, p = .029, r = .24, indicating a small to moderate effect.

What strong Statistics work looks like

Which statistical test do I need?

It follows from your question, variable types and design. Comparing two independent group means is a t-test, three or more is ANOVA, two categorical variables is chi-square, predicting a continuous outcome is multiple regression, a binary outcome is logistic regression. What do I do if my data violates assumptions?

Use the non-parametric equivalent, transform the variable, apply a robust correction such as Welch, or bootstrap. What matters academically is that you report the violation and justify your response. Concealing it is what damages the work.
