Psychology Assignment Help

Psychology assignments are marked against APA 7 conventions, including how statistics are reported. Empirical reports are assessed on whether another researcher could replicate the study from your method section, and results must include effect sizes and confidence intervals alongside p-values, not significance alone.

This page covers what Psychology assignments actually require in UK universities: the assessment formats departments set, the referencing convention the discipline uses, and the specific ways students in this subject lose marks. It is written for Psychology rather than adapted from generic study advice, because the differences between disciplines are what decide the grade.

How Psychology assignments are assessed

These are the formats Psychology departments set most often. Each is marked differently, and answering one in the shape of another is a common and costly error.

Empirical reports

Fixed structure: abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion. The method section is marked on replicability.

Critical essays

Evaluating a theory or body of evidence, weighing methodological quality rather than summarising findings.

Research proposals

Including power analysis to justify sample size and an ethics section addressing BPS guidelines.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Common at final year and master’s level, with PRISMA reporting.

Case formulations

In clinical modules, applying a model such as CBT formulation to a presented case.

Referencing in Psychology

Psychology uses APA 7. APA 7 governs not just citation but the reporting of statistics, table formatting, heading levels and the use of italics for statistical symbols. It is one of the most prescriptive styles and departments mark it closely.

A full citation audit, checking every in-text citation against the reference list and correcting style errors, is £39. It is worth it in disciplines where referencing accuracy is explicitly weighted in the rubric, which includes this one.

Where marks are lost in Psychology

These are the failures we see most often in Psychology drafts. None of them are about writing ability, which is why working harder on a draft that has one of these problems rarely moves the mark.

  • Reporting p-values alone. Significance without effect size or confidence interval. APA 7 expects both and their absence is routinely commented on.
  • Method sections that cannot be replicated. Omitting the exact measure used, its reliability, the procedure order or the software version.
  • Confusing significance with importance. A significant result with a trivial effect size described as meaningful.
  • Introductions that summarise rather than argue. The introduction must funnel to a specific hypothesis, not review the whole field.
  • APA formatting errors. Statistical symbols not italicised, incorrect heading levels, tables not in APA format.

A worked example

Results reporting, before and after

Before: There was a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05), showing that the intervention worked.

After: Participants in the intervention condition reported lower anxiety (M = 12.4, SD = 3.1) than controls (M = 15.8, SD = 3.4), t(78) = 4.66, p < .001, d = 1.04, 95% CI [1.95, 4.85]. The effect size is large by Cohen’s conventions, and the confidence interval excludes values that would be clinically trivial, so the difference is likely to be practically as well as statistically meaningful.

What strong Psychology work looks like

The gap between a 2:1 and a first in this subject is consistent enough to list. These are the characteristics that separate them.

  • Effect sizes and confidence intervals reported alongside every inferential test
  • Method section detailed enough for independent replication
  • Introduction funnels to a specific, testable hypothesis
  • Limitations engage with internal and external validity specifically
  • APA 7 applied consistently to statistics, tables and headings

What UK Psychology departments expect

UK psychology departments accredited by the BPS assess research methods competence across almost every module, not only in dedicated methods units. That means an essay module can still lose marks for uncritical treatment of a study with an obvious design flaw. Ethics sections are expected in any proposal, referencing BPS guidance specifically rather than general principles. Departments also increasingly require open science elements such as a data availability statement or preregistration reference in final-year projects.

None of this replaces your own module handbook and rubric, which are set at department level and vary between institutions. Where they disagree with anything here, follow them. If you send them with your draft we will work to them specifically rather than to the general convention.

Psychology assignment questions

How do I report statistics in APA 7?

Give the test statistic with degrees of freedom, the exact p-value to three decimals (or p < .001), an effect size, and a confidence interval. Statistical symbols are italicised. For example: t(78) = 4.66, p < .001, d = 1.04, 95% CI [1.95, 4.85].

What makes a method section replicable?

Another researcher should be able to run your study from it. That means the exact measures with citations and reliability, sample characteristics and recruitment, the procedure in order, the apparatus or software with versions, and the analysis plan. Vagueness anywhere costs marks.

Do you help with SPSS?

Yes, including test selection, assumption checking, execution and annotated output. Data analysis starts at £99 for Excel and £149 for SPSS, and interpretation of output you already have is £99.

How do I do a power analysis?

Use G*Power, specify the test, the expected effect size from prior literature rather than a guess, alpha and desired power (conventionally .80), and report the resulting minimum sample. Justifying the expected effect size with a citation is the part markers look for.

How we work, and what stays yours

WritingBays provides research support: structural feedback, editing and proofreading, data analysis and statistical interpretation, referencing correction, reference-only model exemplars, and viva preparation. We do not sell work for submission as your own. Your research question, your argument and your conclusions remain yours, which is what makes the support defensible in a viva and compliant with your institution’s academic conduct policy. If you are unsure what your university permits, check its academic integrity guidance before ordering and we will scope the work to fit.
