How Engineering assignments are assessed
These are the formats Engineering departments set most often. Each is marked differently, and answering one in the shape of another is a common and costly error.
Laboratory reports
Method, results, error analysis and discussion. The error analysis is the section most often thin and most often explicitly weighted.
Design projects
A specification, options considered, selection rationale, calculations, and compliance with relevant standards.
Simulation and FEA work
Mesh convergence, boundary conditions and validation against an analytical or experimental benchmark. Unvalidated simulation results carry little weight.
Technical reports
Formal structure with executive summary, nomenclature, appendices of calculations, and figures numbered and referenced in text.
Group design projects
Individual contribution statements alongside the shared deliverable.
Referencing in Engineering
Engineering uses IEEE or Harvard. Electrical and electronic engineering typically uses IEEE numbered citations in square brackets. Mechanical and civil departments more often use a Harvard variant. Standards such as BS EN and ASME are cited by number and year.
A full citation audit, checking every in-text citation against the reference list and correcting style errors, is £39. It is worth it in disciplines where referencing accuracy is explicitly weighted in the rubric, which includes this one.
Where marks are lost in Engineering
These are the failures we see most often in Engineering drafts. None of them are about writing ability, which is why working harder on a draft that has one of these problems rarely moves the mark.
- No error or uncertainty analysis. Reporting a measured value to five significant figures with no statement of instrument precision or propagated uncertainty.
- Design with no rejected alternatives. Naming a material or configuration without showing what else was considered and on what criteria.
- Unvalidated simulation. FEA results with no mesh convergence study and no comparison to a hand calculation or published case.
- Under-invested report writing. Strong technical work presented in a report that loses marks on structure, figure referencing and units.
- Inconsistent units. Mixing SI and imperial, or dropping units in intermediate steps. Marked strictly.
A worked example
Before: The measured deflection was 4.62 mm, which is close to the theoretical value of 4.5 mm, so the experiment was successful.
After: The measured deflection was 4.62 ± 0.08 mm, against a theoretical value of 4.50 mm from Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The 2.7% difference exceeds the propagated measurement uncertainty of 1.7%, so it is unlikely to be explained by instrument precision alone. The most probable contributor is the assumption of a perfectly built-in support: the fixture allows an estimated 0.4° of rotation, which alone accounts for approximately 1.9% additional deflection. Correcting for this brings the discrepancy within the uncertainty band.
What strong Engineering work looks like
The gap between a 2:1 and a first in this subject is consistent enough to list. These are the characteristics that separate them.
- Uncertainty is quantified and propagated, not asserted
- Design decisions name the rejected alternatives and the selection criteria
- Simulations are validated against an independent benchmark
- Relevant standards are cited by number and year
- Assumptions are stated explicitly and their impact assessed
What UK Engineering departments expect
UK engineering departments accredited by IMechE, IET or ICE map coursework to accreditation learning outcomes, which is why design justification and sustainability considerations appear in rubrics even on technical modules. Health and safety and ethical considerations frequently carry their own criterion. Reports are marked against a house format that usually specifies nomenclature tables, figure numbering and appendix conventions, and departments apply it strictly because it mirrors professional practice.

Engineering assignment questions
How much detail does an error analysis need?
Identify each source of uncertainty, quantify it from instrument specifications or repeated measurement, and propagate it through to the final result. Then compare the discrepancy against your uncertainty band and explain anything outside it. That last step is what separates a good report from an adequate one.
