Finance Assignment Help

Finance assignments are marked on method transparency as much as on the answer. A valuation is assessed on whether the assumptions behind the discount rate and growth rate are stated and defensible, not on whether the final number matches a model answer. Showing workings and justifying inputs is where the marks sit.

This page covers what Finance and Accounting assignments actually require in UK universities: the assessment formats departments set, the referencing convention the discipline uses, and the specific ways students in this subject lose marks. It is written for Finance and Accounting rather than adapted from generic study advice, because the differences between disciplines are what decide the grade.

How Finance and Accounting assignments are assessed

These are the formats Finance and Accounting departments set most often. Each is marked differently, and answering one in the shape of another is a common and costly error.

Valuation exercises

DCF, comparable companies or precedent transactions. Marks come from the assumption set: WACC components, terminal growth, and sensitivity analysis.

Financial statement analysis

Ratio analysis across several years and against peers, interpreted rather than tabulated.

Investment appraisal

NPV, IRR and payback, with a discussion of which measure is appropriate and why they can conflict.

Econometric coursework

Regression on financial data, usually in Stata, R or EViews, with diagnostics reported.

IFRS and reporting problems

Applying specific standards to a transaction, citing the standard and paragraph.

Referencing in Finance and Accounting

Finance and Accounting uses Harvard. Harvard variants dominate. Finance work cites annual reports, Bloomberg or Refinitiv extracts and regulatory filings alongside journals; each needs a consistent format and a retrieval date where the data is live.

A full citation audit, checking every in-text citation against the reference list and correcting style errors, is £39. It is worth it in disciplines where referencing accuracy is explicitly weighted in the rubric, which includes this one.

Where marks are lost in Finance and Accounting

These are the failures we see most often in Finance and Accounting drafts. None of them are about writing ability, which is why working harder on a draft that has one of these problems rarely moves the mark.

  • Ratios without interpretation. A table of twelve ratios and no analysis. The ratio is the input; the judgement is the output.
  • Undocumented assumptions. A DCF with a discount rate that appears from nowhere. Every input needs a source or a justification.
  • No sensitivity analysis. A single point valuation with no indication of how it moves with the key assumptions.
  • Ignoring diagnostics in regression. Reporting coefficients without testing for heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation or multicollinearity.
  • Citing standards vaguely. Referring to "IFRS rules" rather than the specific standard and paragraph.

A worked example

Ratio analysis, before and after

Before: The current ratio fell from 1.8 to 1.2 over the period, and the quick ratio fell from 1.1 to 0.7.

After: Liquidity tightened materially: the current ratio fell from 1.8 to 1.2 and the quick ratio from 1.1 to 0.7, taking the latter below the conventional threshold of 1.0. The gap between the two measures widened, which indicates the deterioration is inventory-driven rather than a general cash problem. Read alongside the 41-day increase in inventory days and flat revenue, this is consistent with overstocking ahead of demand that did not materialise, and it is the same pattern that preceded the 2023 write-down disclosed in note 14.

What strong Finance and Accounting work looks like

The gap between a 2:1 and a first in this subject is consistent enough to list. These are the characteristics that separate them.

  • Every model input has a stated source or justification
  • Sensitivity analysis shows how the conclusion moves with key assumptions
  • Ratios are interpreted against peers and across time, not tabulated
  • Regression work reports diagnostics and addresses violations
  • Standards are cited by number and paragraph

What UK Finance and Accounting departments expect

UK finance departments expect submitted spreadsheets and code, not just the written report, and marks are available for model structure: named ranges, an assumptions block separated from calculations, and no hardcoded values inside formulas. Data must be traceable to a named source with a retrieval date, because reproducibility is assessed. Where a module uses live market data, the marker will run your model against the same source, so an undated Bloomberg extract is a genuine problem rather than a formatting nicety.

None of this replaces your own module handbook and rubric, which are set at department level and vary between institutions. Where they disagree with anything here, follow them. If you send them with your draft we will work to them specifically rather than to the general convention.

Finance and Accounting assignment questions

How do I justify a discount rate?

Build WACC from its components and source each one: risk-free rate from current government bond yields with the date, equity risk premium from a cited source such as Damodaran, beta from a named provider or regression with the estimation window stated, and cost of debt from the actual debt profile. Then test the valuation at plus and minus one percentage point.

Which software do finance modules use?

Excel throughout, Stata and EViews for econometrics, and increasingly Python or R for data-heavy work. We support all of them, and return annotated files so you can explain the workings.

Why do NPV and IRR disagree in my answer?

Usually because of non-conventional cash flows, mutually exclusive projects of different scale, or different reinvestment assumptions. Noting the conflict and explaining which measure is appropriate for the decision is a marked skill, not a problem to hide.

Do you help with CFA or ACCA-style coursework?

We support university modules that follow professional syllabuses. We do not sit or assist with the professional examinations themselves.

How we work, and what stays yours

WritingBays provides research support: structural feedback, editing and proofreading, data analysis and statistical interpretation, referencing correction, reference-only model exemplars, and viva preparation. We do not sell work for submission as your own. Your research question, your argument and your conclusions remain yours, which is what makes the support defensible in a viva and compliant with your institution’s academic conduct policy. If you are unsure what your university permits, check its academic integrity guidance before ordering and we will scope the work to fit.
